We said “I do.” Then came the work.

Hello Reader,

News of the Week

I remember it like yesterday.

16 December 2016. (Where we are from, this is a Public Holiday and normally the start of the silly season.)

That day...

Summer sun. No wind. No rain. Perfect.

Guests arrived. Venue set.
I was nervous AF and excited as hell.
Then I saw her, Nadine, in that white dress.

Beautiful. Stunning. Perfect.

We said “I do.”
We celebrated with family and friends.
It was a great fuckin day.

And then… came the real thing: marriage.

Nine years later, here’s the truth:

It’s not perfect - Far from it!
It’s hard AF sometimes.
There have been tears and bliss.
Losses and wins.
Silence and laughter.
Two boys, a new country, and a thousand ordinary Tuesdays.

We left South Africa for Australia, Nadine 31 weeks pregnant with our 1st child.
Halfway around the world.
No safety net... just faith, love, and a whole lot of choosing each other.

And I wouldn’t choose anyone else to do this life with.

Here's 9 lessons from these 9 years... some I fail at miserably, some I work extremely hard at, and some that I've had to put my ego aside for...

9 lessons from 9 years

  1. Choose each other daily. Feelings fluctuate. Choice anchors.
  2. Fight the problem, not the person. We’re on the same team.
  3. Assume good intent. It softens the tone and opens the door.
  4. Repair fast. Say sorry quickly. Hug sooner. Pray together often.
  5. Protect small rituals. Coffee walk. 10-minute check-in. Phones down.
  6. Lead yourself first. Fitness is the foundation - I show up better when I’m steady.
  7. Name the season. Newborn, night shift, launch - adjust expectations.
  8. Gratitude out loud. Don’t think it. Say it.
  9. Keep the mission in view. Faith, family, legacy - why we started.

This week’s small challenge

  • Send a voice note (30–60s) to your partner: what you appreciate, right now.
  • Plan one 30-minute walk date - no phones, just a loop and a chat.
  • Ask: “What do you need from me this week?” Then do the first small thing you can.

Nadine, thank you for trusting me, for bringing our boys into the world, for crossing oceans with me, for staying when it was heavy, and for laughing when it was light. I love you.

For everyone reading: your marriage doesn’t need perfection.
It needs presence.
And a decision - over and over - to build what lasts.

Set your emotions aside.

Your execution is all that matters.

Hello Reader, I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. Let me know what you think of this newsletter please? News of the Week This week I was busy AF!!! Last Monday, after a full day on site, I didn’t want to workout because I quite literally was “too busy” I got home later than normal, and instead of cracking open a beer and slouching on the couch, I got moving with my boys instead… After that session I asked myself a question: Why has “being busy" become some sort of bragging right? It should embarrass us...
