Who are you when nobody is watching?

Hello Reader,

I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.

Let me know what you think of this newsletter please?

News of the Week

Wednesday morning...

4:45am.

I'm standing in the car park outside my gym.

It's dark.

Quiet.

Most people are still asleep, including my wife and kids,

And I'm standing there thinking about one question...

Who are you when nobody is watching?

Last week was a tough one...

Mentally, I was fuckin cooked.

Work had been relentless.

The pressure was high.

And my physical training had to take a back seat while I focused on protecting my mental capacity.

Prayer.

Meditation.

Morning stretching.

One run.

That was my week.

And I was okay with that.

Because sometimes discipline means knowing when to protect yourself.

But this week?

I had more capacity.

So it was time to get back to building...

HIIT LIVE with my community.

Two evening runs.

And an early morning gym session.

Not because I had anything to prove.

But because I'd made a commitment to myself.

And I wanted to honour it.

Which brings me back to Wednesday morning.

4:45am.

Outside the gym.

Nobody checking whether I'd shown up.

Nobody waiting to congratulate me.

Nobody keeping score.

I could've turned around.

Gone home.

Gotten back into bed.

And the world would've carried on exactly the same.

Nobody would've known.

But I would've known.

And that's what got me thinking.

We spend so much of our lives chasing things people can see.

The weight loss.

The promotion.

The bigger salary.

The business growth.

The race medal.

The transformation photo.

The big fuckin breakthrough.

And there's nothing wrong with wanting those things.

But here's what we don't talk about enough.

Almost everything meaningful gets built long before anyone can see the result.

And most of that work?

It's boring.

Repetitive.

Uncomfortable.

And completely unremarkable to everyone except the person doing it.

There's a story about the Chinese bamboo tree that illustrates this beautifully.

The way the story goes...

You plant it.

Water it.

Feed it.

Look after it.

And for about 5 years...

Very little appears to be happening above the ground.

You keep showing up.

Keep watering.

Keep caring for it.

But from the outside?

Nothing!

Then, when the conditions and root system are established, the growth above ground can be remarkable.

Now, the popular version of this story gets exaggerated.

But the lesson is worth remembering.

What you can't see developing might be what makes future growth possible.

The roots matter.

Long before the height does.

And isn't that exactly how life works?

You start training.

For weeks, you don't look much different.

But your body is adapting.

You start saving money.

Your bank balance barely moves.

But you're learning how to manage what you earn.

You start working on your marriage.

One conversation doesn't fix everything.

But trust can begin rebuilding.

You start reading.

Learning.

Praying.

Working on your mindset.

And nothing dramatic happens overnight.

But something is changing.

You're becoming a different person through what you repeatedly do.

Here's where so many of us get stuck, especially in todays society of instant gratification...

We want proof...

...Immediately.!

We want to know the workout is working.

That the sacrifice is worth it.

That the effort is paying off.

That we're not wasting our time.

And when the results don't appear quickly enough...

We start questioning everything.

Maybe the plan isn't working.

Maybe I'm not cut out for this.

Maybe I should try something else.

Maybe it's just too hard.

And before we've given anything enough time to take root...

We dig up the fuckin seed to check whether it's growing.

Then wonder why nothing ever gets established.

But I want you to think about something.

What if the most important progress you're making right now...

Isn't the progress you can see?

What if it's the fact that you're learning to keep your word?

That you're becoming more patient?

More resilient?

More consistent?

More capable of doing difficult things?

What if every time you show up...

Even when nobody is watching...

You're building something much more valuable than the result you're chasing?

You're building trust in yourself.

And I think that's one of the most underrated parts of fitness.

It's not just about becoming stronger.

Or fitter.

Or looking better.

It's about becoming someone who can say:

"I'm going to do this."

And increasingly trust that you'll follow through.

Not perfectly.

Not every single time.

Because life happens.

You get sick.

Work gets crazy.

Your kids need you.

Sometimes your body needs rest.

Hell, by Thursday I got sick, off work on Friday and was dealing with terrible sinus symptoms myself. πŸ˜‚

But the goal was never to build an identity around never missing.

It's to become someone who knows how to keep returning.

Someone who can adjust without abandoning the bigger commitment.

Someone who doesn't need perfect conditions to keep building.

And here's why this matters beyond the gym.

Because when you trust yourself to follow through on small commitments...

That confidence starts showing up elsewhere.

At work.

In your relationships.

In how you handle pressure.

In how you manage money.

In how you respond when things don't go to plan.

In how you show up as a parent.

And perhaps most importantly...

In the example you're setting for your kids.

Because our children aren't only learning from our big achievements.

They're learning from our ordinary decisions.

They see us make commitments.

They see us struggle.

They see us adapt.

They see whether we keep trying.

And those little moments become part of the blueprint they're growing up with.

So maybe that 4:45am gym session wasn't really about building muscle.

Maybe it was another opportunity to practise being the man I'm trying to become.

A man who keeps his word.

Who takes care of his health.

Who can do hard things.

Who knows when to push.

And when to recover.

Who doesn't need an audience to do something worthwhile.

Because at the end of the day...

The most important person watching your actions is YOU.

You're the one who has to live with the promises you keep.

And the ones you break.

You're the one building the relationship you have with yourself.

Day after day.

Decision after decision.

So here's my challenge for you this week.

Think about something you've been working on.

Maybe it's your health.

Your finances.

Your career.

Your faith.

Your relationship.

Something that matters deeply to you...

But hasn't given you the results you hoped for yet.

Before you decide it's not working...

Ask yourself:

Have I actually given this enough time to take root?

Have I been showing up consistently?

Have I been learning and adjusting?

Am I building something sustainable?

Or am I digging everything up every few weeks because I can't see the result yet?

And then ask yourself one more question.

Who am I becoming while I do this work?

Because the visible result might still be months away.

Maybe even years.

And no, effort alone doesn't guarantee the exact outcome you want.

Sometimes you need a better plan.

Different support.

A new approach.

But don't mistake a lack of applause for a lack of progress.

And don't mistake invisible work for meaningless work.

Wednesday morning.

4:45am.

An empty car park.

One quiet decision to walk through the gym doors.

Nobody applauded.

Nobody needed to.

Because I knew why I was there.

I wasn't just building my body.

I was building the man who has to live the life I'm creating.

And that work counts.

Even when nobody's watching...

...Especially then.

Fitness as the foundation.

Character as the structure.

Presence as the reward.

Your Coach,

P.S. If you're doing the work but haven't seen the results yet, don't automatically assume nothing is happening. Check your process. Make adjustments where needed. But give good habits time to take root. Some of the most valuable things you're building won't show up in a progress photo.
