A letter to my 8-year-old son ❤️

Hello Reader,

I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.

Let me know what you think of this newsletter please?

News of the Week

Hey Carter,

This week you turned 8 years old.

And what a privilege it's been to be your dad for every single one of those years. ❤️

I still remember you coming into this world.

This tiny lil human...

All 2.39kg of you.

I remember looking at you and realising:

I'm responsible for this little guy now.

I was scared.

Excited.

Overwhelmed.

And incredibly grateful.

Because God had trusted your mom and me with the responsibility of raising you.

Not to create a smaller version of ourselves.

But to help guide you toward becoming the man you're meant to be.

A good man.

A kind man.

A strong man.

A man of purpose.

A man of faith.

And now you're eight...

You're not that tiny lil human anymore.

You've got your own friends.

Your own interests.

Your own ideas.

Your own personality.

Your own little world that's getting bigger every year.

And I'm very aware that Daddy isn't your entire world anymore.

...You know what?

That's OK.

Because I'm slowly realising that my job was never to remain your whole world.

My job is to help prepare you for yours.

I just hope the years when I was your whole world...

Help build the foundation for the years when I'm not.

And as you continue growing and becoming more independent, there are a few things I hope that foundation always brings you back to:

Stay curious.

Never stop asking questions.

Never become so convinced you know everything that you stop learning.

Stay humble.

No matter how successful you become, remember where you came from.

Treat people well.

Stay faithful.

There will be seasons where you don't understand God's plan.

Trust Him anyway.

And one more thing...

Dream BIG, my boy.

Over the next few years, people will start asking:

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

And your answer will probably change 400 times. 😂

That's okay.

Footballer.

YouTuber.

Business owner.

Something that doesn't even exist yet.

I don't care.

What I care about is that you never stop believing your life can become something extraordinary.

There will be times when you have a dream and someone tells you:

"That's not realistic."

Listen respectfully.

Sometimes people who love you will see risks you don't.

Sometimes me as your Dad will too.

Wisdom matters.

But never confuse:

"I don't know how to do that yet..."

with:

"That can't be done."

Those are two VERY different things.

Look at people you currently admire.

Ronaldo.

IShowSpeed.

The Rock.

MrBeast.

Whatever names are on that list when you're older.

At some point, there was a gap between the life they were living...

And the life they believed they could build.

They had to start somewhere.

And so will you.

That's what I want you to understand about big dreams.

The dream can be enormous.

But the work usually starts incredibly small.

One practice.

One video.

One lesson.

One failure.

One uncomfortable conversation.

One more attempt.

Again.

And again.

And again.

So don't shrink the dream simply because you can't see the whole path yet.

Set goals that excite you.

Goals that scare you a little.

Goals that require you to grow.

And then...

Become the person capable of achieving them.

Learn.

Work.

Fail.

Adjust.

Pray.

Stay humble.

Keep going... brick by brick.

And Carter...

Maybe you'll achieve every massive dream you ever set yourself.

Maybe some dreams will change along the way.

And they probably will.

That's life.

But your mom and I will never measure the success of your life by followers...

Money...

Trophies...

Or whether everyone knows your name.

I care far more about the man you become while chasing those dreams.

Are you kind?

Do you keep your word?

Do you treat people well?

Do you work hard?

Do you look after yourself?

Do you love your family?

Do you use what God gave you well?

Do you have the courage to become who you're called to be?

That's success to me.

Eight years ago, I held this tiny 2.39kg boy in my arms.

Today, I'm watching that little boy slowly become his own person.

And while there's a small part of Dad that wishes I could slow all of this down...

There's an even bigger part that can't fuckin wait to see who you become.

So go dream, my boy.

Dream ridiculously big.

Then stay humble enough to start ridiculously small.

And wherever those dreams eventually take you...

Know that Mom and Dad will be here.

Supporting you.

Guiding you.

Praying for you.

And loving you all the way.

Happy 8th birthday, Carter. ❤️

Stay curious.
Stay humble.
Stay faithful.
Dream BIG.

Love,
Dad
